A very rough couple sketches of possible designs.
Skylight sketch
May 8, 2010First GPS Drawing test
May 3, 2010So here is the first image I could get that was close to what I was hoping for. It is a close up of me at my house. Squiggly satelite drift. I had to do a screen shot and then open it up in Photoshop and then crop etc. to get this far. My concern is that screen shots will restrict us to pretty small scale prints…no necessarily a problem but definitely a restriction.

April 30, 2010Idea Fragment: A globe (perhaps motorized and glowing) covered in map pins of varied colors or, if available, clear (to allow a distorted version of the globe surface to be visible).
Other Postcards
April 30, 2010A selection of postcards displayed in the gallery (on racks, on the wall, in stacks, etc.) to be taken by visitors. The cards depict the area immediately above a place. Usually postcards give a view of a place (placing the viewer outside that place actually) but the view given by these places the viewer in the place. As this is essentially the sky, I imagine little variation from card to card. If a place is/can be a point on the globe, is there a limit on the space above that point? Where does the place stop being the place and start being another place? Descriptive text on the back explains what place is imaged on the front….just like a standard/traditional postcard. I would love to see these migrate into the world as functioning cards to be sent, etc.
It occurs to me that these reference visually and formally, the skylights that litter the space at CIIS. Perhaps this can be highlighted in the display of the cards.
from memory
April 28, 2010I like the fact that the floorplan of your ‘parents house’ is from memory. What other structures could we model from memory? Or from social memory (ie places neither of us have been)? What would the Washington Monument look like? or my 3rd grade treehouse? or the guard towers at San Quentin?
More paint
April 26, 2010Perhaps we paint portions of the gallery those Place Name colors from the card. The colors/orientations could change over time and move in relation to one another. Maybe a whole wall. Maybe just two or three squares, 12″x12″ that are painted over from time to time.
Pin ups
April 26, 2010I like your idea for hanging the drawings with map pins…especially if the pennants are echoed elsewhere in the exhibition. Here is an image of an option.
